I had a problem playing some avi files in windows media player 10 so i downloaded the “Ace Mega Codec Pack” and the avi files then played ok. The only problem is that my mpeg files, having previously played perfectly (i.e. with rectangular “6x4” dimensions) still play ok but now all appear square (i.e. “4x4”wink, meaning the the picture is distorted and people look thinner etc.

I quite like windows media player and don’t want to have to start using another player.

I’m assuming that the problem is due to a codec that I have downloaded from the Ace Mega Codec Pack - can anyone point me in the right direction of which codec it is likely to be / how to spot it so that I can remove it??

Any help much appreciated.

Argh! This is why I tell people to stay away from codec packs! Some filter in the codec pack doesn’t render the aspect ratio of your MPEGs correctly. There’s very little chance of finding out which one though. If your codec pack has a menu to add/remove components, you can do trial and error to find out which component is causing this by uninstalling them one at the time (and hope it’s not a combination or conflict of multiple components). (some codec packs don’t even have good uninstall options - meaning the filters will STAY after you uninstall the pack... another reason I recommend against them).
