The original poster (see #8) specifically said “when i try to open the file in windows media player, or nero show time it doesn’t show any video, just the visuals, but it’ll play the audio." He obviously does not have the video codec to decompress the video. What good will using nero and whatever the second tool is if neither of them will be able to read the video?

I’m surprised at Topsy’s second post (I’m not even sure if it’s him, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.)
As for “hacktivism”, I’m pretty much against it. It’s never proved useful in any way, shape or form. If certain features don’t suit you, you can always express your opinion to the owner. Whether he implements changes is his prerogative - it’s his site and he can do as he pleases. Bringing down the site does nothing to improve it (not to mention, will bring you the wrath of innocent bystanders).
As for the new people turning this into a chat community: like I said there’s nothing wrong with that, but changing the domain name would make more sense (since its main focus wouldn’t be video or codecs anymore).
I think despite some of its faults, the community blossomed somewhat ok (compared to the horrors I’ve seen on irc). Sure, it’s no utopia, but what do you expect from an online internet community?

Hey dumbass he asked for a converter too, dont be puttin me down.

OK, we now know the file uses the xvid codec. Do you have it? If not, download it here http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml (click on XviD-1.1.2-01112006.exe) and install it. Then tell us if you can play your file in Windows Media Player and if Nero can open it.
If Windows Media Player can’t play it, download and unzip this (Media Player Classic) http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=82303&use_mirror=superb-west&filename=mpc2kxp6490.zip&32735062 and try playing the file with it.

Next we’ll need to know this: is your standalone DVD player DivX-certified, and what formats does it support? (examples are DVD, VCD, SVCD, DivX, Xvid, MP4 - you should find it in your manual - if you can’t find your manual, tell us what the make and model of your standalone DVD player is).
Finally, we need to know what program(s) your DVD or CD burner came with (if any) (I just want to see if they can burn movie DVD’s or VCD’s or SVCD’s at all).

thank you so much, the xvid codec worked~!!! it will open in media player. i can’t hear anay sound though. my dvd player isn’t divx-certified. it will play dvd and vcd. it doesn’t play mp4 though or svcd’s. the make of my dvd player is memorex. my computer just came with roxio record now. you can’t record anything but data cd’s with it, which is why i got nero. it won’t play any mp4 files. just mpeg 2 or vcd’s./

OK about the audio: It’s AC3. You’ll have to get a filter to decode that in Windows Media Player (or any other app). I’m not very well versed in audio, but you can look in the audio download section or the audio forum for help on that.
Personally, when I need to play a file with AC3 audio, I just play it in Media Player Classic http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=82303&use_mirror=superb-west&filename=mpc2kxp6490.zip&32735062

Some technical notes: Why can’t you just get a codec for AC3 just like you would for mp3 or any other audio codec? The MS sound system has 2 channels (stereo - left and right), and AC3 uses 5 (I think), so you can’t just toss in a codec like that. What you need is a filter that talks directly to the hardware and sends all five channels. [Media Player Classic has a trick and mixes it down to two channels (it’s a setting you can turn off), so that’s why it works.]

Once you have a filter Nero will be able to read the file, both audio and video.

Your standalone DVD player isn’t DivX-certified, so you won’t be able to read data CD’s with AVI encoded in DivX or xvid in it.
If you only have a CD recorder, your options are limited.
1. You can get a DivX-certified standalone DVD player (making sure it supports Xvid as well) - they cost a bit more than regular DVD players, but it’s really worth it if you get a lot of movies online, because most of them are in DivX or Xvid with mp3 or AC3 audio - saves you the hassle of conversion - all you do is just burn a data cd-r.
2. You can get a DVD burner for your PC. Also a costly solution, but now you can burn DVD+/-R which any DVD player can read - it takes some time to convert an AVI to DVD (MPEG-2) format though.
3. You can burn a VCD (MPEG-1) or SVCD (MPEG-2) (or span your movie over several to preserve quality). Or even a KVCD (if your DVD player supports it). It’s been a while since I’ve used Nero (and I only used Nero Express), but doesn’t it have a menu at the start to burn vcd or svcd? I was so sure I’d seen it before. An alternative to VCD/SVCD is mini-DVD. It’s basically burning DVD data (with VOB files, subs, chapters, etc.) onto CD-R’s. You may also have to span it over several CD-R’s to preserve quality. If Nero or your standard CD-burning program(s) don’t support any of these, you may simply have to get another program that does. I *think* TMPGEnc has a VCD/SVCD wizard at the start. Again, http://www.tmpgenc.net, click download at the top left.

Addendum: Some DVD players may support burning *data* CD’s with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files (that’s DIFFERENT from VCD or SVCD - they have totally different file structure on the disk), so check your manual - that may be another option - again, using TMPGEnc for conversion to MPEG.

i just tried converting the video with tmpgenc and it only converted it to an mpeg4 file. how do you convert it to mpeg 2? i just tried opening the file with media player classic, too, and it says, “the following pin(s) failed to find a connectable filter." then it shows Cgrinocuments and settings/blah/blah/blah and says, “media type: 0” then a dotted line shows...

OK, the free version of TMPGEnc at tmpgenc.net does not convert to MPEG-4. Only to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.

Are you using the right version of TMPGEnc? Here’s the page again (I don’t normally post direct links, but you seem so hopelessly lost) http://download1.pegasys-inc.com/download_files/TMPGEnc-2.524.63.181-Free.zip

You didn’t say whether your DVD Player supports MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files on data CDs...

If you manage to get the version of TMPGEnc I put the link to, I suggest you start with the wizard and try to make a VCD.
There’s no point in making a DVD since you don’t have a DVD burner, nor an SVCD, since you said earlier your player doesn’t support them.
And until you can tell me your DVD player supports MPEG-2 files on data CD’s there’s no point in making MPEG-2 files either.

yes, my dvd player will play mpeg 2 files on data cd’s because that’s how i usually burn vcd’s. what format do i select on the wizard. i have it on video c.d. but there is NTSC, NTSC Film, and PAL to choose from. which one do i click in order to make a vcd?

Where are you located? If you’re in North America or Japan you’ll probably be using NTSC, else you’re using PAL (those are television standards).

One recommendation: If your standalone DVD player can read CD-RW, it’s a good idea to burn a CD-RW and test whether it’s readable or not before making a permanent CD-R. If it’s not you can erase and make another one.

OK. Clarification: VCD is MPEG-1. SVCD is MPEG-2.
A data CD with an MPEG-1 file on it is NOT the same as a VCD.
A data CD with an MPEG-2 file on it is NOT the same as a SVCD or a DVD.

For example, VCD has a very specific structure. If you look at a VCD in Windows Explorer you’ll see a specific folder structure, and likely a file named AVSEQ01.DAT. Likewise in a DVD you have specific with folders named VIDEO_TS, or IFO, BUP, and VOB files.

Sorry about the delay.
You need the AC3 filter to decode audio in (any) application (including WMP). (Media Player Classic has its own internal decoder, but that won’t do you much good in TMPGEnc.)
I think this site hosts it here
http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/20d.html
Then re-run the wizard.

user SUPER < — it’s freeware
(http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html)
to convert any kind of videos to VCD/SVCD/DVD

u dont need to know any codec or types or other thingies

Just check if the resulted file size fits on your media
If it doesn’t, split the file using a video splitter/cutter
something like Easy Video Splitter
http://www.doeasier.org/splitter/ < — it’s freeware too
