i’ve been having trouble burning avi to a blank cd. i tried using nero, but it says that the file type is unsupported. i tried using video converters to convert the file to mpeg, but none of them have proved useful. i need some help here. i’ve tried using roxio and burning the cd as a data disc, but whenever i put it in my dvd player it does not work.

Can you be more specific about the type of media your standalone dvd player accepts? (Common types are: dvd, vcd, svcd, data cd with divx-encoded avi, data cd with xvid-encoded avi, data cd with mpeg-1 files, data cd with mpeg-2 files, etc.)
I’m asking because I can’t tell if you’re making vcd’s or data cd’s with mpeg-1 files on it (they’re different, and that makes a difference for the standalone dvd player).
Also on nero not being able to read the avi file to convert it. What codec does the avi file use? Feed it into gspot or avicodec to be sure. I’m wondering if it could be an avi with a directshow codec only (as opposed to a video for windows codec), or if it’s a wmv or mov or mpeg renamed as avi.
For avi to mpeg conversion I recommend tmpgenc (the free version is at tmpgenc.net - NOT tmpgenc.com). If your avi uses a directshow codec, you may need to adjust some settings (get back to me if that’s the case).

my dvd player accepts vcd’s and it only seems to work when it’s an mpeg 1 or 2 file. and i have no idea what coded the avi file uses. what is gspot and avi codec? when i try to open the file in windows media player, or nero show time it doesn’t show any video, just the visuals, but it’ll play the audio. if that helps you any. oh and which link do i click on tmpgenc.net to download it? this will surely let me convert the avi file to mpeg?

2 carrot...I thought U have long gone, but still hanging around here. All the rest of us have since left this site 4 ages s it is not a moviecodec 4rum s it once used 2 b. This site has now been taken over by moths n butterflies, n Bjarne doesn’t seem 2 care anymore. What a shame!!!!

I’m replying to you separately first, because I have another reply for topsy, which will be rather long.

gspot and avicodec are utilities to identify video files. They’ll tell you file type, container, codec, dimensions, etc. The most useful info they tell is the fourcc (four character code) of the video codec. That will tell you if you have the codec to decode the video or not. Now you’re telling me you’re unable to play the avi in any player, that pretty much tells me you’re missing the codec. Wait no further and get one of the diagnostic utilities!
gspot: http://www.headbands.com/gspot
avicodec: http://avicodec.duby.info

(I think once you find the codec, nero will be able to read the file)

P.S: I just checked out tmpgenc.net and they REALLY hide the download page now (it used to be next to the 2004.12.16 entry). It’s at the top of the page; click download (between tmpgenc.net and faq). BTW tmpgenc won’t open your avi either if you don’t have the codec.

topsyturvy

I used to be mod (anonymous) (I just use carrot for convenience), but I kind of bailed out when I saw the site took a turn toward social networking/forum rather than video/codec-related stuff. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I think it’d make more sense to change the domain name (bjarnelundgren.net for example). Some of the people are quite nice (Thyreaus Rade is a name I recognize from the days I left off.) I can’t say I know any of the newer people or mods even.
I never got involved in moderating the off-topic board; some may have thought it was laziness, but having had experience on irc i knew of the impossibility of keeping any kind of order on an internet forum like that. I recognize myself (from irc days) as one of the more idealistic people in there (those currently in off-topic) who deplore at the cruely, inhumanity, and irresponsibility of the flamers and trolls; but by now I know better than to get involved.
With respect to the video-related boards:
The way neophytes post creates too much entropy to keep any kind of order in the video-related boards. Instead of starting a new topic, they post a totally unrelated question at the bottom of a thread, thereby creating threads that are hundreds of posts long - who’d read that just to find a simple answer? I think locking a topic past a certain amount of time could have been an answer.
I’m also aghast at some of the posts that are pointless (example quote another post and typing nothing else). They litter the board (see the guides board for examples).
Finally I just couldn’t bear the spamming by the imtoo and winavi people. Anytime anyone would ask a question about conversion, they’d reply as a guest and say to use their product. Eventually Bjarne put them in his download pages. I don’t know if it’s out of necessity to maintain funds to keep the board alive, but it’s always irritated me.

Yes, I remember the regular audio/video responders: frightfoo, anonymous, topsyturvy, carrot, marcus aurelius. There weren’t many of us...
I still have unpublished solutions to obscure codecs, and maybe I’ll find a place to post them someday.

Yikes! Whenever you type imtoo or winavi the server generates automatic html linking! I didn’t put it there!

carrot...it’s nice 2 know that U R still lurking around the corner from time interval. I hacked this site once by shutting down the video/images from showing but apparently Bjarne found the fault. I can’t stand all the moth n butterflies here @ moviecodec, especially those so called teenies mods. They turned this site in2 some chat communities rather pure video/audio problem. I hope that Bjarne would take some drastic change 2 it b 4 I alter it 4 him by locking out all his useless MODs once n 4 all.

993052 and anti-moviecodec’s posts are exactly the kind of posts that give me the shivers and want to make me go. The original poster (see #8) specifically said “when i try to open the file in windows media player, or nero show time it doesn’t show any video, just the visuals, but it’ll play the audio." He obviously does not have the video codec to decompress the video. What good will using nero and whatever the second tool is if neither of them will be able to read the video?

I’m surprised at Topsy’s second post (I’m not even sure if it’s him, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.)
As for “hacktivism”, I’m pretty much against it. It’s never proved useful in any way, shape or form. If certain features don’t suit you, you can always express your opinion to the owner. Whether he implements changes is his prerogative - it’s his site and he can do as he pleases. Bringing down the site does nothing to improve it (not to mention, will bring you the wrath of innocent bystanders).
As for the new people turning this into a chat community: like I said there’s nothing wrong with that, but changing the domain name would make more sense (since its main focus wouldn’t be video or codecs anymore).
I think despite some of its faults, the community blossomed somewhat ok (compared to the horrors I’ve seen on irc). Sure, it’s no utopia, but what do you expect from an online internet community?

It’s me alright who wrote it. I put in the wrong phases when I used the word HACK. I just disabled the Images/Video function. Yea..U right..carrot. Its useless 2 hack s it is illegal. I used irc s well especially from Mirc..but not anymore. Blogging 4rum r much more fun than irc. Well..carrot..why don’t U PM Bjarne ur suggestion? He will listen 2 U since U have been a MOD once. If U can pursuade him 2 do that..ppl like me n the rest of the 4mer team might return. (I hope that labish/Marcus Aurelius R reading)n not 4getting BigFoot s well. Hmm..by the way..where is FrightFoo?

There’s no way to know unless you find out what’s in the file.
Do these things:
1. What’s the extension of the file? (does it end in .avi .wmv. rar .asf or something else?)
2. Go to http://www.headbands.com/gspot and download gspot and open your file with it, then paste to us what it says.
3. Go to http://avicodec.duby.info and download avicodec and install it and open your file with it, then paste to us what it says.
