dieguez Guest | I’m downloading shows off the net, and they are avi’s, and I was wanting to compress them into a different format to cut down on size and upgrade quality. Is there a codec out there that you guys would be a great choice?

P.S: You can edit a video, but it would be hard to “upgrade quality”. Recompression is usually a lossy process. I mean you can apply filters to sharpen or blur, but that’s not really “upgrading quality”.

anonymous Guest | For the highest compression microsoft mpeg-4 version 3 (hacked as divx 3), xvid, and divx 5 would be good choices. I would particularly recommend learning how to do multiple passes with xvid and divx 5. The divx guide has info on how to do that.

For each codec:
xvid: http://www.koepi.org
divx: http://www.divx.com
Microsoft MPEG-4 version 3 for avi - http://www.undercut.org/download
divx 3 - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html
