mpg file problem

hey ho @all!
can someone tell me pls, pls how to convert a mpg into mpeg or avi files?
my media player very often has problems with mpg.
none of my players is playing those downloaded mpg files-
or do you know any repair-freeware software?

The mpeg files you are downloading may be mpeg-2 as opposed to mpeg-1. If that is the case playing them with media player classic (www.gabest.org) or videolan (www.videolan.org) should work.
In some cases (well in many cases if you’re downloading from peer-to-peer networks) the file may be a renamed avi, quicktime, or windows media file. In that case use one of the tools listed on this page to find out what codec you need for your particular file. http://www.moviecodec.com/questions/neededcodec.html
