Media players keep crashing when trying to play avi files

so for the past month now I’ve been having some trouble playing movies on my computer. Only recently did I figure out that my media players were only crashing when trying to play avi files, and not any others. I’ve looked for answers elsewhere, and most of the suggestions involve downloading more codecs, although I don’t think this is the problem. I’ve been up to date with my codec’s for awhile, and I downloaded Gspot to try and identify the problem, but it only gave me this error message when trying to render the video:

Warning: DirectShow crashed while attempting to render this file.

This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers. It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow. Although GSpot was able to intercept the crash, attempts to identify the codec which caused it have failed. Unfortunately, no additional information is available at this time.

If anyone thinks they can help me out, let me know. It would be much appreciated.
