Blanking Desktop screen on xvid playback

When I try and play an Xvid or Divz at first I could only get audio. After I installed the latest codec’s now the whole desktop starts blanking out to the extent that i have to reboot. I have never had probs like this before but I have had to reformat after a system upgrade. I am running XP pro, SP2 1 gig ram, Gainward 7800gs+ video card. Can someone please help?
