codec error msg on .avi file

i have downloaded an .avi file, and when i try and play it through Windows Media, it comes back w/ a codec error...how do i remedy this?

I think a friend had an issue with something like that. Try going to http://www.divx.com and downloading there player it should include codecs to play. I think he doesnt view movies on WMP he just used the divx player. If you dont wish to use the divx player as i said the setup should throw some codecs at you so it could also play in WMP.
