I just purchased a sony dvd-r, dvd-rw drive with sonic my dvd ver.5 software. When I try to add video files, I get an error code that states “could not create thumbnail. Make sure that the appropriate decoder is installed," Do you have any solutions to this problem.

play the dvd in a suitable player ie powerdvd for a few minuits before you try to add the files,maybe then it will find the decompressor

I managed to fix the thumbnail decoder error on my computer after having no luck with any of the suggestions from the sonic site or other forums. I noticed that when importing an mpeg, the matroska vsfilter was being loaded (system tray), and then I remembered that I had changed a setting in the vsfilter to “always load” instead of “load when needed”. After changing it back, problem fixed.
