I recently downloaded an avi movie file from a site that i registered to...it’s a .wmv3 file so i downloaded codecs accordingly. The only problem is that when i try to open it using my Windows Media Player v7.1, i get an error saying “error: class not registered” with no details whatsoever. I also attempted opening it using Quicktime v6.5.1, but an error also popped up that stated “You may experience problems playing a video track in ' — — — — -.avi' because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue?" And after that, there is no audio or video. However, when i tried it on windows media player classic, the movie did play, but the audio and video were horribly out of synch (the audio played much faster than the video) and eventually, i would get an error. They would vary for some reason. Sometimes, i would get one of those “this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." errors, or a microsoft visual C++ runtime error stating “Runtime Error! Program: C:\MPLAYERC.EXE abnormal program termination” or “The program has terminated itself in an abnormal way” [that is soo vague] I feel as if i have tried everything to open this file...if anybody has any tips or explanations or codecs that might help....shoot!
These are the details that pop up when i get the illegal operation error in case they may help anybody diagnose my problem.

anonymous Guest | First could you run gspot on the file to make sure that it’s indeed an avi container and not windows media (asf/wmv)? If it’s an avi, check to see that the file length is correct (gspot will tell you that). Also make sure you have the windows media video 9 VCM codec. (this will allow wmv3 inside an avi container to be read)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
(second or third download only! the first package doesn’t have the VCM)
If windows media player still won’t play it, feed it into media player classic or avipreview.
If all else fails run virtualdub, go to file, open, then at the bottom click ask for extended options after this dialog. once you pick your file, check 're-derive keyframe flags' and 'open avifile in compatibility mode'.
Hopefully you won’t need to get that far to read your file, but if you do chances it are it’s corrupt.
Oh and I should just throw in - wmv9 is like divx. it’s a processor-intensive codec, so if you have a weak processor (~

anonymous Guest | ugh the html parser chopped my text after the “less than” sign
continuing...
so if you have a weak processor (~less than 300 Mhz), it’s likely to drop frames, or seem to freeze or play out of sync. In that case you can try playing it in virtualdub. It’ll play without dropping frames, but the sound will be totally unrecognizable (slow-motion).

great, so it appears my only options are to upgrade to a better PC, or to run it in virtualdub and have to listen to japanese voices in super slo-mo.....looks like im gettin an XP.
