WMP and Nero play certain mpeg files shorter than they are

Hi some of my mpeg files aren’t playing correctly in WMP or Nero Showtime or Divx. They all seem to be mpeg files. The problem is the player thinks the file is shorter than it really is (e.g. an 8min file shows up as a 5min file on the playlist). It will play the file up until the time listed and then just audio or it will stop playing completely. If I try and go to a different part of the video with the search bar it will take me to the correct spot but play only until the time listed, not to the end of the file.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I really don’t know what to say. If people don’t reply it may simply be because they don’t know the answer. I don’t have much experience with files with time errors, but here’s two anecdotes that may help you.
- this was specific to my machine. (k6-2) others may not have had the problem. when i installed the elecard mpeg-2 decoder the time on all my mpeg movies became messed up. like a 1:30 clip would display a playing time of like 56:37 or something. It went away when I uninstalled elecard.
- If you feed an mpeg-1 into virtualdub, virtualdub will scan the file and alert you for breaks (like missing or corrupt portions in the middle of the file). Corrupt data in the middle will sometimes keep the file from playing until the end.

I have no answer but, if it’s any comfort, I’ve had exactly the same problem since installing Nero 6 ...

hmmm so maybe nero 6 is to blame... btw I was able to get some of the clips to play correctly on DVD but only some of them

I’m having this same problem now with .mpg files. All come up significantly shorter than they actually are.

Same problem here, only mine has nothing to do with nero. I don’t exactly know how many different codecs are installed on my PC and whether it’s one of them that’s giving me trouble, but I don’t have nero at all.

Ok, here’s a solution:
Get the old-school Xing mpeg player off the web somewhere. I found it on some pakistani isp website, forget where tho. That plays 'em.
