hanaku Guest | as to the video converters , here is a passage about some information about video formats ,which I searched on web ,and want to share it with all of u.
As we all know that video formats are classified into two applications, one for local use and the other for Internet. The formats for local use include AVI, nAVI, DV-AVI,MPEG suite, Dvix, MOV, etc. What the differences between these formats? I¡¯m here to give some general information as a guide.
AVI, Audio Video Interleaved, is developed by Microsoft in 1992. AVI has such advantages as high image quality, application in multi-platforms. But its disadvantages are also explicit, large volume, without a unified compression standard, and the most common nuisance is that the higher-version Windows Media Player simply can¡¯t play AVI videos which are edited with earlier codes, and vise versa.
So it is not a uncommon case that when we AVI videos , it just don¡¯t work or anyway it works ,there is only audio without image or such kinds of weird problems. If you happen to be stuck with these tracks, download related codecs to cope.
MPEG, Moving Picture Expert Group, is the format of VCD, SVCD, DVD. This format applies lossy compression to reduce redundant info in active images, and to express it more clearly, MPEG makes use of the fact that the two contiguous images are almost the same, to extrat the redundant info of the latter image ,as so to meet the compression aim( the highest compression reaches 200:1).At present, MPEG suite family members are MPEG-1,MPEG-2,MPEG-4.The other two MPEG-7 and MPEG-2 are right now under development.
If you are wanna do something about converting mpeg to other formats .Here is a good choice: ImTOO MPEG Encoder ,a powerful video converter which contains functions of iPod video converter and MPEG converter, can convert to 3GP, MPEG(MPG), WMV, AVI, DivX, MP4,, PSP among most popular video formats. The video converter (MPEG Encoder) software also provides a powerful way to extract audio from video files, convert among all audio formats including CD, MP3, WMA, WAV, etc.
MOV, developed by Apple , features a high compression ratio and near perfect definition, while its most outstanding trait is its trans-platform ability, supporting Windows other than its intimate pal MacOS.
But not many players support all the formats, so if you have such differently formatted files stored in you PC, and wanna play them on your iPod, PSP,or cute mobiles, you have to do some conversion work , You can google them .

Well, I have to say AVI is annoying.I ever downloaded many movies from the internet, most of which were AVI ,and I could not open them .So the time for downloading just were wasted.
I enterer the link you give http://www.moviecodec.com/imtoo.html
and find the ImTOO AVI MPEG Converter, can it solve my problem? Is it the codec I need? Maybe I Should try it.
Oh,I am such an idiot on the format

As you may have heard, there is a new movie compression technique called DivX , spreading across the Internet underground and starting to catch people’s attention .
Why? Well, the reason is that DivX can compress AVI files (conventional movie files, like the ones you can produce using video capture techniques) to a tiny fraction of their original size, without the loss in quality often associated with formats like RealMovie!

DivX ;-) is the name of the a hacked version of “MPEG-4” a standard of compressing video, that was combined with the quality compression of MP3 audio (a form of compression for audio). It all started when a video codec (a software driver) was created by Microsoft for use in its WMA (Windows Media) architecture, which originally supported encoding ASF & AVI.
However all non-beta (for public use) versions of MPEG-4 included an AVI lock, making it impossible to use them to encode to the AVI format. What the makers of the new DivX ;-) format did was remove the AVI lock making it possible to encode to the AVI format
The standard is an improved version of the MPEG video compression format that is used to compress AVI files for use in DVD disks.
If u need to rip the content of DVD to DivX , Here I recommend DVD Ripper Platinum , which is an all-in-one DVD ripping software which can rip DVD to all popular video and audio files including DivX . If u are not familiar with this, here is one guide about how to use it on http://www.mp4converter.net/guides/guide-rip-dvd-to-psp-3gp-ipod-mp4.html .This standard also enables the use of MP3 sound compression to make the file size even smaller.

The most significant benefit that make DivX;-) better than most video compressions is because it’s very easy to install; it only takes five steps and 30 seconds to install the driver.
Please note however, that only certain movie players can understand the driver. This means, people with QuickTime or Real Player movie players are out of luck.
However, it’s known that other operating systems can use this driver with their own movie player software (Built-in).
Currently the operating systems BeOs, Mac Os, Linux and Windows support the driver that enables the use of DivX ;-) for encoding and playing back movies.

AVI is considered by many to be an outdated container format.
There is significant overhead when used with popular MPEG-4 codecs (XviD and DivX, for example), increasing file size more than necessary.
The container has no native support for those codecs' modern features like B-Frames. To circumvent this problem, cumbersome hacks (programming) are used, causing incompatibilities in some players. Hacks are also used to implement subtitles.
The highly efficient H.264 codecs use even more compression tricks, and thus are even more ill-suited to the format, particularly Main and High Profile.

Wannabe Rep: 0 Joined: 24 Dec 2006 Posts: 63 OFFLINE | Despite its limitations and the availability of more modern container formats (see Matroska, Ogg and MP4), AVI remains popular among file-sharing communities.
This is probably due to its high compatibility with existing video editing and playback software like Virtual Dub and Windows Media Player.
Even many video converters support converting .avi ,too. When u googled video converters on the web, u will find top ranking softwares ,such as Xilisoft video converter ,supports almost all the popular video formats on the market including .avi. u can even get one trial edition to have a test, here is the web to download http://www.xilisoft.net/video-converter.html.
The tendency has been to install codec packs like ffdshow to augment DirectShow, using AVI as a common-ground, lowest-common-denominator format.
Ironically, while the codec/container incompatibilities mentioned in the above paragraph have undermined AVI’s near-ubiquity, the obscurity and tech-savviness of those involved in the file-sharing groups has rendered this irrelevant.

Wannabe Rep: 0 Joined: 24 Dec 2006 Posts: 63 OFFLINE | Projects based on the FFmpeg project, including MPlayer, xine, and VLC Media Player, have rendered most problems with viewing AVI format video files irrelevant, regardless of internal format or codec needed, due to FFmpeg’s high compatibility.
In June 2005, DivX, Inc. released its own container format called DivX Media Format (.divx extension) to succeed the AVI + DivX combo.
However, this format is basically an enhanced AVI format (based on the same RIFF structure) and so far, has gained no perceivable traction in file-sharing communities where the DivX codec is popular.
