Nero Vision Express.2E /Computer freezups while encoding

I would be grateful for any help with the following problem.

I can play an AVI video file without problem by opening it in my LG Power DVD program. The problem is that I am experiencing a complete freeze of my computer during attempts to burn a dvd disk from an AVI video file. Nero Vision Express.2E begins the encoding process and when it indicates “Creating menus and transcoding streams” it immediately freezes the computer.
This freezing also occurs when I go into the folder that the AVI files have been downloaded to.
The instant the Microsoft windows media player icon pops up the computer is frozen.

I suspect that the problem is either with Nero or with Windows media Player which incidently is the original loaded version when you load windows 2000.
