DVD won't play

I see some of the posts here are very technical, so please be gentle, since I’m clueless. I have a standalone DVD Recorder with my TV that I’ve created DVD-RAM that I’ve recorded directly from TV. I want to copy that onto a DVD-R or +R using my computer. I have Nero 6 burning software and it tells me when I use -R that is has copied successfully. But when I give that copy to someone, it doesn’t play on their standalone DVD players (some old, some new), although it will play on their new computer. Should I just try +R format or is there possibly something I’m doing wrong in the copy process?

Any help will be greatly appreciated since I’ve been back and forth with Nero tech support for over a month and they’ve told me yesterday they don’t have any further suggestions and can’t solve the problem.
