cropping black bars?

I use imTOO DVD Ripper and Divx codec to back up my movies, and always use widescreen version instead of pan/scan. I heard somewhere that a lot of space can be saved by simply not encoding the black bars at the top and bottom of widescreen. Anybody know a good program or tip?
