Read data on home DVD player

Hello, I’m in need of some help here. I wanna know if it is possible to convert video files into a format, which you can burn as DATA and then play on any home DVD player.If so how? I know that it can play if there’s DivX decoder with the DVD player, but what if there isn’t? Anyone got any idea?
