Hello..in the FAQ it has a link which is supposed to take you to a page describing various tools to determine what CODEC is used in a program. I occaisionally get a popup telling me I don’t have the right codec for a video but I have no way to determine which one I need. I was happy to see the link but when it didn’t work I was unable to get the CODEC tests. Here is the bad link from the FAQ page:

http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/5041p1.html

Is the link to test programs elsewhere or is there someone else who can help me test a DVD to determine what CODEC I need?

Thanks,

Lew

Better if you start with what you try to do. Tools for an avi file to find out the missing codecs are GSpot and Avicodec. Both are video analyzers and if you open your file with one of them is going to help you with details about it. Avicodec give you a link where to download the codec from just click on web tab. Here is a link for codecs: http://www.free-codecs.com/ and download a codecs collection like I have: All in One,Xvid, DivX, XP pack, FFDSHOW, and for sound AC3 filter. Also try players like VLC and Media Classic works better and use their own codecs. All from above are freewares. Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply and tips. I was hoping the owner of this site would want to fix their bad link and then I would be able to see what they intended. I will go and check out the programs and site you mentioned.

Thanks again,

Lew

I forgot to mention.... I am mainly having problems when playing DVDs on my computer. That is when I get the error message. My computer is running Roxio’s player. It doesn’t tell me the codec I am missing, it just says I am missing the proper codec and it will back down to a less compliant codec. Is there a program that will look at a DVD and determine the codec needed?

VSO Inspector is a tool to check your dvd burner and some stuff. It’s a freeware and works very well. It’s very much like Nero Info or if you have Roxio, DVD Info. http://www.vso-software.fr/products/inspector/inspector.php
To play a DVD you need a software designed for that and Power DVD or WinDVD are very complex. If your PC is aking for codecs maybe you don’t have Power DVD or similar and that means your PC does not have a MPEG2 decoder in order to play the dvd. From the site I gave you to download codecs, FFDSHOW or Satsuki Decoder Pack is what you need.

Hello again Marcus,

I ran Nero Info, Roxio DVD Info, and I looked at VSO Inspector and didn’t find CODEC information on any of them. Maybe they call it something else or we are talking about two different things?

Roxio plays the DVDs and they seem to be OK, but before playing them it says I am missing a CODEC but doesn’t say which one.

A friend of mine tried to play a MPG file and it had a blank screen. I have him load the DIVX CODEC and it then played the video. In my case, Roxio plays the DVD, but it indicates it is doing it in a degraded manner as it doesn’t have the right CODEC identified by the DVD.

I was thinking the programs you referred me to would have a field such as:

CODEC: DIVX

Thanks,

Lew

I can tell you’re an expert. Nero info and Video Inspector and DVD info check your media and tell you if your dvd is good or bad. I did not say is going to check codecs. GSpot and Avicodec do that. If you download the list of packs I gave you you can see DivX is between them. Also if you don’t have a decoder for MPEG2 you need it so start downloading all the stuff from above won’t hurt your computer and the best of it are free(one comes with Roxio but have to be activated). Play the DVD with one of the players VLC or Media Classic. If you’re in love with your Roxio go on their site and look for codecs. I play my dvd’s with Power DVD by Cyberlink but is not a freeware so the cheap way is download a free decoder Satsuki pack. VLC player is one of the best player better than WMP, or Nero or Roxio and is free, same Media Classic. Here is something to read about it: http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversion/index.php/t9952.html
