poor video quality with .mod files

Hi all. I was able to pull the .mod files from my camcorder and convert them to vob files with WinAVI Converter. When I burned the DVD however the quality was horrible. Is there something I’m missing? Is there a way to get the .mod files onto a viewable DVD while keeping the quality?
