Difficulties with success when attempting to burn avi to dvd. Help would be appreciated.

A lot of the time I will hear and get good quality sound when I play the .avi file in my computer on Mplayer before burn, after I burn the dvd , a good portion of the dvds I burn lack sound in a regular dvd player. My questions are.. Is there any way to check and see before I burn a particular .avi file if it will produce sound after being put into dvd format. Is there any possible to way to get the sound to work in dvd format like it does in .avi before it’s burned to some of the files which sound gets lost in the burning process? Any help would be greatly appreciate and Apologize if this question has been brought up before. Thanks.
