Hello,

I am having problems playing back movies. It’s like this:

At first, everything worked OK. Then I had to do a reinstall of WinXP. I installed all needed programs, and of course a codec pack with media player classic. But when opening any kind of video file, the system hangs very badly, mouse response is like 10 seconds, it’s like slomo in a way. Then I have to reset, Task Manager won’t do anything.

I’ve tried to uninstall the codec pack and installed a few others, I’ve tried new media players (BSplayer, VLC, WinAMP), I’ve installed an older graphics driver (this was the only one which was different from my old, working configuration) and also reinstalled Windows twice, to no avail. There is something strange: when I open MPC and go to Options, it crashes and says “error in comctl32.dll ". I’ve searched the net and found out that my version is up to date.

I don’t know what to do or where my problem could be. Please give me some hints on where I can start problem-hunting.

Thank you in advance,

Dilbert

Sounds like a video card problem. Try to install first the DirectX and after that the drive from manufacturer. Also utilities like Tuneup is going to clean your registry.Good Luck.

Some programs replace Windows files with their own files. The Windows Commctrl.dll, Commdlg.dll, Shell.dll, Lzexpand.dll, Ver.dll, or Mmsystem.dll files may have been replaced by files from another program.
In order 2 correct it..U’ll have 2 do the following steps.
Extract the corresponding file in place of the one listed in the error message U received. In the instructions that follow, replace <name> with the name of the appropriate file. This file will be one of the following files: • Commctrl.dll for Comctl32.dll
• Commdlg.dll for Comdlg32.dll
• Shell.dll for shell32.dll
• Lzexpand.dll for Lz32.dll
• Ver.dll for Version.dll
• Mmsystem.dll for Winmm.dll
NOTE: If U are using Windows 98 or 98 SE, n Windows 98 starts, use the System File Checker tool 2 replace the damaged file with a new copy of the original file. 4 in4mation about how 2 use System File Checker, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type “system file checker” (without quotation marks), click Display, n then double-click Using System File Checker.
Otherwise, restart your computer 2 a command prompt, n then copy the <name> file from the Windows\Sysbckup folder 2 the Windows\System folder. This replaces the existing file with the Windows version of the file.
That’s it. End of Disscusion.

TT this is a winxp not 98. The problem was fixed long time ago and I guess he install the SP2 again. Anyway reinstalling Directx might help after so many codecs but here is a link to a free registry scan: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/comctl32/

Hello,

thanks for your posts. I installed an older graphics driver from Nvidia and it works now.

For others that maybe have the same problem, my data:

Win XP with SP2 & all updates
Point of View 6600 GT graphics

Forceware 93.71 and 91.47 didn’t work, 81.95 works now.

Thanks again for your help.

This is from NVidia: Note this driver version ( 93.71) does not support the Media Center Extensions. These will be included in an upcoming driver release. And that was in Nov.2 2006.
