AVI too large for DVD?

Hi
I have a movie on my MAC that is in .avi format. I have tried to burn this file to a DVD using Toast v6 and the program tells me that the file is too large for the DVD.

How do I get around this? Someone suggested converting the file to .iso format and then compressing it... then burn it to a DVD. Is there another way? If not, what is the best program for a MAC that can do this?
