Best way for DVD to AVI

How do I go about extracting the files off of my finished DVD to further edit them....do I need to do a tedious analogue transfer and re-author a new disk? Is there any possible way to regain access to the original AVI files that where used....Any recomended techniques or programs that may help??? Normal windows explorer cannot access any files on the DVD.
