Decreasing File Size

Hi

Im not sure whether this question was asked already i tried to do a search but couldnt find anything on it....

A couple of friends of mine came to visit a while ago and the one guy had a digital cam and he took a bunch of mpg clips. All the files are 640x480 and around 30mb each but i would like to know how i can decrease their size to make them small enough to email efficiently. Halving the resolution or something like that...

I got a program called Video Edit Magic which apparently is able to do just that but everytime i open one of these files the program just takes forever to open these files, even the SMALL ones of less than 1mb. I dont think my PC is the problem as its specifications are better than what required to use the program.

Are there any other programs i can use? My PC isnt GREAT but its PIII 866 with 128mb ram which i thought might be enough. I really want to email some of these files to a friend overseas but 30mb is just too big.

If they’re mpegs you can try tmpgenc

If you want to shrink them further make avi’s use virtualdub and some flavor of divx (3 or 5).

If you want to shrink the files to a max and if you’re willing to sacrifice quality/seekability in the process try windows movie maker (included in windows xp) or download windows media encoder (not recommended if the recipient of the video uses a mac or a unix machine)
