problems opening mpegs from browser

Whenever i try to open a .mpg file in my browser, it adds an extra .mpa (so movie.mpg becomes movie.mpg.mpa) extension to it. If I use winamp, there is no picture and there is garbled sound. The only way to play it is to use windows media player or to find the file and reduce it to .mpg. I think it started happening after I installed a 3rd party app that required I update my windows media player.

When i load mp3 files or any files in the player. some files are working and some files are corrupted. There is no virus. the files are changed in to unusable files. For example it shows in the name “USB>S)"
Please tell me how to save the files without corrupting
