I recorded some AVI files on my old computer with the ATI All-in-Wonder 128. My new computer has the ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon. It records and plays new AVI and MPG files okay. But the video portion of my old files will no longer play; I get only the audio. FourCC identifies the file codec as VCR1, with the name ATI Video Codec 1. I reinstalled VCR1 from the ATI website, but the video portion of the old files still will not play. Any suggestions?

On the FOURCC page:
http://www.moviecodec.com/fourcc.html

You can search for the FOURCC 'VCR1', which leads you to the:
ATI VCR1/VCR2 video codec

More specifically, you can download it from:
http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/ativcrx.exe

Actually that download won’t play VCR1 right if you’re using Windows NT 4, 2000, 2003, or XP (pure 32-bit OSes). VCR1 is a 16-bit codec. It plays fine on Windows 95, 98, and Me though (hybrid 16/32-bit OSes).
Use ffdshow-tryouts instead if you have Windows NT 4, 2000, 2003, or XP. http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/335d.html Be sure to select VCR1 decoding in the settings (I don’t remember where they are since I’m not using ffdshow at the moment, but if you’re having trouble locating them, get back to me).

(There’s another way to play it in XP/2000/etc. with that package, but it involves installing Virtual PC, then Windows 95, 98, or Me inside the virtual machine - get back to me if you’re adventurous (bored) enough to try it).
