Help! - converting avi file into dvd-avi

Hi there
I’m a complete novice, thought I’d get theat in early!

I’ve downloaded an avi video and I believe I need to convert it to dvd-avi so that the copy I burn to dvd+r disc will play on my home dvd player. Help!!

I’ve done a little searcing and all roads seem to lead to download software. Is there an easy and free way to convert so that an existing avi [or mpg] will play on my home dvd player? For info I’m using Sonic My dvd V.5

i have avi files , i have a vso convertor downloaded from the site. but it does not help me to convert it inot a dvd file and burn it on a disc. what should i do
