CAF is the name of whoever encoded it. What program did you use to downoad the AVI file?

You could try this guide on how to fix a corrupted AVI file (however, if the program that you used to download the file has corruption handling, the guide won’t be that useful):

http://www.rita.lt/video_tools/fixing%20bad%20frames%20w%20no%20audio%20loss.html

Also, is FFDShow installed? This can cause crashes if incorrectly configured.

Same problem for me. I have an Xvid file made by 'CAF' (a supposed DVD rip)and I have tried opening the file with avi-preview, bs player and windows media player. All these programs crash at frame 0. I have tried meddling with the file in Virtual Dub and Virtual Dub Mod, and all the frames don’t load. Virtual dub mod gives me an unkown error (code 100) and suggests that the frame it is at (for all of them) is possibly corrupt. I have the latest Xvid codec and have fixed FFDshow for Xvid (I think I did it right because other Xvid’s play properly). I used bittorrent to download the file and winRAR to extract the AVI. Thanks for any help I get.

I fixed it! I used video toolbox on the file and found that my Xvid sucked. If you are having problems with a caf file go here http://koepi.roeder.goe.net/xvid.shtml and download the fourCC XVid codec. The top one. Enjoy.

I also had the same problem (explorer crashes) when i previewed an XviD movie in explorer. The fix was to get a new version of xvid codec. This is what i got: XviD-1.0-RC4-05042004

from http://koepi.roeder.goe.net/xvid.shtml

uninstall the older xvid and then install the new. works fine afterwards.

Koepi’s XviD has been upgraded to:
XviD-1.0.1-05062004.exe (617kb)

That version should work fine.

It is a driver problem. Some how, Windows media player commit to a wrong file interpretation (stream) and attempt to connect
