Cant watch video files

Whenever i get the majority of my movie files i open them up and windows media player only tends to play the first frame and not play the rest, occasionally it will have sound but no picture, although avi’s tend to play fine.

Can anyone help me pls:

My Computer: Win98se - latest mindows media player - latest divx codec, plenty RAM and processor power and a good spec video card.
