Increase .avi volume

I have an .avi file encoded with Tag 8192 codec.

The sound is very low.

How do I increase the volume of an .avi file?

I want to use Windows Movie Maker (the only video editing software I have), but am willing to install new freeware based on a good recommendation.

Virtualdub (and its offshoots) lets you do this.
But you can get problems with synchronisation
