newbie question windows avi codecs

I am making a windows avi from an image sequence but need to be able to burn the avi to dvd using as many authoring packages as possible. Is there a common avi codec/fourCC for most authoring packages? I don’t know a hell of a lot about all this so hopefully I’m making sense.

I’d be very grateful for any help or pointers to other sites that might help me.
