I have the same problem here using Windows Vista DVD Movie maker. I can view the video in WMP but can not burn it to DVD, I am going to try cnverting the videos as changing the extention to mpg does not help.
I’ll let you know my results

Kalico Guest | I downloaded the k-lite codec and can now play the videos on windows media player but I am also not having any sound? Any suggestions?

Kasumi Guest | My MOD files play fine on wmp, but when i go to import them into PowerDirector, i get a error message saying “an error occurred when opening this media file in the Library." I tried changing the file type, too, but it still won’t import it. I have never had a problem with importing MODs before. Can anyone help?

another lost user Guest | I have converted several files utilizing the extension then just changing the file from mod to mpg...However, my the file then crashed and I have to reopen the folder for the next file. I have over 200 files to convert, meaning at this pace I will still be converting in 2010. Can someone help?

no luck also...thanks to jvc for their brilliant products,
idea..in my own opinion that why all this things happening
jut simply as.....they want us to purchase their own dvd burner which her in dubai cost approx. 200 us dollar..just ask your salesperson or whwrever you purchase your jvc hdd
camcorder...

JVC Owner--Frustrated Guest | My problem is similar. I can play my .MOD files in Windows Media Player, but when I go to edit them in Windows Movie Maker the program does not recognize the file type. When I rename the extension to one that Windows Movie Maker DOES recognize (such as .AVI or others suggested) then WMV still refuses to import the video. I have tried other programs designed to recognize .MOD files, but after all the time I have invested in learning to use WMV I really hate to start all over relearning a new program. I really can’t for the life of me understand why MicroSoft doesn’t just updated WMV to recognize .MOD and other files. Maybe WMV is just going to fade into the sunset?

Let It Be Guest | I have had a JVC hard disk camcorder for over a year now, and I’ve gone through all the same stuff as you guys. The ONLY thing that has ever worked for me is a HUGE pain in the ass, but here it is:
You have to load your .MOD files off your camcorder onto your hard drive. If you have all the Cyberlink programs loaded this should be no problem. Then you can import your .MOD files into Cyberlink PowerDirector. You can edit your clips there if you want, but we all know it is a crap editing program. If you want to edit your clips in a more powerful program like Roxio or Pinnacle, you need to put all your clips into a Cyberlink PowerDirector project (as though you are editing them there) and Produce a movie to your hard drive (make a 'file' option), saved as a .AVI or a .MPEG (.AVI is best quality I find.)
THEN you can import your file into your other editing program. Unless your program has scene detection you will have to recut it yourself.
I have tried pretty much everything, and this is the only thing that works. Renaming either doesn’t work or causes audio to disappear. I have found one or two codecs that work, but they severely lower quality. If anyone knows of any free codecs that actually work well, I’d love that.
Warning: This method will use up a TON of hard drive, unless you delete as you go (IE, once you have produced your clips on Cyberlink, you delete raw .MOD files off your harddrive, and once you have produced/burned on your other editing program, you delete the .AVI or .MPEG from Cyberlink.) I have a Windows XP, started off with 30 gb of hard drive, and now have 343 mb.

Let It Be Guest | Oh, and for those of you that are interested in buying quality editing programs that recognize .MOD — Pinnacle Studios 10 DOES NOT. All it has been is a pain. It says it recognizes .MOD, but you need to register your program first and get some stupid code, which, once entered, is supposed to allow .MPEG and .MOD import, but it doesn’t work. I have emailed and phoned customer service and there are not helpful. I gave up and just did everything through Cyberlink.
ISN’T TECHNOLOGY WONDERFUL?!

aprilms Guest | I downloaded some movies in .avi and .mpg formats and am having trouble figuring out how to burn them. Nero Express only recognizes .bup, .vob and .ifo files and will not let me burn what I have. I have tried renaming the files but it still does not recognize them. What do I do to fix this problem.

gjdgjd Guest | I have seen all the JVC mod file problems and hope that the following is helpful. MOD files are not MPEG-2 files although the video they contain is MPEG-2 (in the same way that VOB files are not MPEG-2 files). If you change the file extension and start joining the files together the sound will go progressively out of synch. If you cut sections out and join them then it is not too bad but it can take years with a 100 or so files to process. The thing which works reasonably is to open the Cyberlink Power Producer and to import all the MOD files that you want. Merge them in batches of 5 until there is only one file shown. You now produce your DVD but it is very very important to choose a DVD bit rate which is not less (or not much less) than the recording you made. The reason for this is that the Cyberlink programme is absolutely useless at compressing video. If you recorded it at the finest setting (approx 4GB per hour) then choose the 8GB output DVD. If you recorded it at the standard setting (approx 2GB per hour) then choose the 4GB output DVD. This will then produce a set of VOBs which are in good shape and can be converted to MPG or used directly as you wish. I normally (join them and) use them in VirtualDub. The VOBs are excellent except that there are a series of annoying sound problems arising from the JVC camera. The camera responds over-sensitively to certain noises so you end up with pops and crackles. I normally export a WAV file from VirtualDub and run it through the Nero WaveEditor to reduce these. The JVC camera also has a problem with sound level and on occasion you will get overload in conversion leading to crackling/distortion which I tend to deal with by lowering the volume of the affected parts in VirtualDub (which is where the cleaned up WAV file is reintroduced). Once in VirtualDub I save them as AVIs (generally DivX) with a very high bit rate, forget that the MODs ever existed and eventually resend the AVIs back to DVD (Nero Vision Express) if wanted. Later versions of Nero will import MOD files directly but it won’t merge them and you have serious “sound overload” issues which are not easy to deal with. Sorry its so long but sometimes its worth knowing why things are done rather than just doing them. So.....
Merge the MODs in Cyberlink PowerProducer
Produce a high(er) bit rate DVD
Use the VOBs (joined into 1 big VOB if useful) in VirtualDub to make high bit rate AVIs
Use the AVIs from then on.
