While trying to load mkv video file, my Media player announces that file cannot be rendered. I use Matroska pack 1.1.2. The other players also can’t play the file (I have tryed VLC, BSp, Media Player 9).
After this I have tryed to install K Lite mega codec pack, in which Matroska splitter is also included. The result was the same - file was unable to be loaded. However, computer gave me an error message - “Firts element in file is not EBML”. After this I’ve tryed to check the file with MatroskaDiag tool. That’s what this tool announced me about that file:
TEbmlReader.ReaderHeader : EBML header ID not found (found 0x5A0D)

DirectShow RenderFile check :
Matroska Splitter : Gabest’s Matroska Splitter

Installed : no
Can be created : no
Matroska Splitter : Haali’s New Matroska Splitter

Installed : yes, in straight\Program Files\Matroska Pack\haali\splitter.ax
Can be created : yes
RenderFile with DirectShow : Unspecified error (0x80004005)

DirectShow detailed rendering :
0> MyRenderFile : straight\Documents and Settings\jumpas\Desktop\Hiragana\[A-Party] REC - 01 [lt] [h264] [49F7F6C1].mkv
0> Creation of GraphBuilder : OK
0> Creation of FilterMapper2 : OK
0> Adding graph to ROT : OK
375> Creation of source filter : Unspecified error (0x80004005)

Now, I am trying to download another one *.mkv file, but it seems that the story will be the same... Please help me as fast as you can...

“Firts element in file is not EBML”

It is likely that your file is broken. Check if the CRC checksum matches 49F7F6C1.

Use HashCalc to calculate CRC checksum:

I had the same problem with mkv files, where before my computer crashed, they played fine, but after it was fixed I got RenderFile with DirectShow : Unspecified error (0x80004005) from MKV DIAG. The solution was in installing:
DirectShow FilterPack 3.0
Now everything works fine. By the way, I use Zoom Player, its got a great interface, where to pause, you click the screen, and scrolling moves the file +/- 5 sec.

Thank you!!

I had this problem with the mkv files, installed CCCP codec pack under default settings but everything i tried to open the mkv files with would return an 'Unspecified Error'.

Installed DirectShow FilterPack 3.0 and now it works.. smiley
