First find out if is an avi file. Go here: http://www.free-codecs.com/ and download GSpot and install it. Open your avi with GSpot and if is an avi the tool is going to tell you if you may need some codecs.Just click on render video and audio.After that download from the same site players like VLC and Media Classic are free and works better.
