I had the exact same problem. Power outtage, no video whatsoever no matter how many codecs I downloaded. I reinstalled my nvidia driver and nothing. Then I looked at the settings and noticed that the nVIEW display setting was set to clone, I changed this to single display, and shit worked again

PeteJones you are a genious! I have been trying for a couple of months to be able to play avi files again. I have googled it and tried everything. I too had reinstalled codecs, tried vlc (which works on my notebook) all to no avail. Gspot said I had the codecs installed, but still it would play audio only on many video files. The problem was the Catalyst Control Center for the ATI graphics card. As soon as I switched it to “home” as Pete described, everything works.

I had an identical problem, I have an ATI based graphics card, simply re-installing the drivers did not work but have now found the solution:-
I opened the ATI control panel (Cataylst Control Centre) went to Video - Video Basics. Video Presets was set to Custom. I just changed it to Home and everything works again - problem solved!

Thanx a lot ppl. I solved my problem too...For some days have uninstalled and installed drivers codecs and so on... Thnx again... Has been enough change the ATI Catalyst settings from custom to Home/Theater...

Make sure the codec you are using are Gspot and make sure ur player is ok then if u got it..it shouldnt have been a problem anymore. hope i helped you thanks

I have a similar audio but no video problem. Have enough codecs to choke a horse. The avi’s in question play in vlc, or on the DivX but converting to .vob to burn leaves me in the same situation with the .vobs. Also, burning with DivX leaves them unplayable.

I too have an ATI card (R9250-128ADT), but cannot find a Catalyst Control Centre (or ATI Control Panel) anywhere.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

OK Update, I’ve updated my ATI drivers & now have a Catalyst Control Centre. It is set to Home by default, but I am unable to alter that even if I wanted to (greyed out). The update has not improved the ability to play these .avi files, and Gspot says I have the codecs installed. They are mpeg-2 3 Layer.

So now I’ll try converting from .avi to mpeg2 and see if I can burn them.
