AVI DVC/DV Video - not playing in Media Player

I’ve got a bunch of AVI files, recorded from Adobe Premiere from a DV Camcorder. They’ve always worked fine in all my media players.

However recently, Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Media Encoder 9, can no longer open them. QuickTime, Media Player Classic, and Adobe Premiere can still open them just fine.

I’ve installed and uninstalled several codec packs including ffdShow and K-Lite, to no avail.

I don’t believe that the issue is that the codec is missing, however, just that programs that use Microsoft’s Media Player components can’t connect with the codec somehow. (Notice that all the programs that won’t open my AVI’s are MS products)

I ran GSpot and it says my 4CC is: dvsd/dsvd, that rendering failed, and that 2 compatible codecs were found: DV Video Decoder, AVI Draw. Clicking the “2 compatible codecs installed” button, pops this up:

Nonetheless, DirectShow is apparently NOT able to play this file. (see “DirectShow Render”, below). No further information is available concerning the apparent discrepancy

I guess Premiere, Media Player Classic, QuickTime, don’t use DirectShow... anyway, I really need Media Player Encoder to open my AVI’s again. Help? Thanks in advance.

Adobe choose Main Concept as an encoder and I can tell is one of the best.If you read the comments some guys use this and TMPGEnc for a good result. http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Mainconcept_MPEG_Encoder
If you want Windows Media Encoder just use search on the same site. Also try to open your avi with players like VLC or BSplayer or Media Classic all of them freeware and use their own codecs anyway better than WMP.Just Google the one you like and install it.

Hi thanks for the reply.

I already use Media Player Classic, yes I like it. I already have the Windows Media Encoder, and it used to work, it’s just that this recent codec fiasco has stopped it from working, along with Windows Media Player.

I’d like to fix my Windows Media Player so that the WM Encoder, and any other software that uses embedded WMP, will work again.

... thread bump smiley

Has anyone ever seen this before? GSpot says the codec is installed just fine, but that video can’t be rendered by GSpot, or played in WMP, but can be played just fine by some 3rd party players?
