cannot render file despite having correct codecs

Recently ive had the problem of not being able to play any new avi files i download. I think it is a problem with my download manager corrupting the file(s) somehow....i get an error of “cannot render the file”. Using Gspot, i have checked and found i have the correct codecs, but that it cannot find a combination of filters to render the file. Anyone know how to fix this?
