mpg files created using Hauppauge DEC2000 (DVB digibox) plus DVB-TV.exe cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker - WMM complains the file cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on my computer. However, the same mpg files play fine using Windows Media Player 9 and other players on the same PC. I think the Hauppauge DEC2000 uses the On2 VP6 codec. Other mpg files (not from the Hauppauge digibox), import into WMM. Can anyone suggest a solution ?

I had exactly the same issue where movie maker was working fine for months importing my mpg files created by Gigapocket - but after I upgraded to Player 9 - movie maker began complaining that it ocld not import the file yet I could play it on mplayer

I can import the file OK but it only drops into the timeline as an audio file - so something had changed recently with the software.

Is there a solution to this issue??? I was cleaning up my machine after installing my Hauppauge TV-PVR tuner and deleted some codecs. Now the files that I have recorded do not play in WMP 10 or MM. I have tried to reinstall WMP 10 and tried to add the codecs that I deleted - but to no avail. Any suggestions????

I have the same exact problem!

The file E:\William’s file\Games-files-etc\[naruto-kun.com]intro6\6intro.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Sorry for not posting the solution. Unfortunately, I don’t entirely recall how I fixed the problem but I can give you something to try because that’s how I solved my problem - kept trying different codecs. I used Nimo 50 Build 8, sld codec pack 2.2 & Cole 2k Media Codec Pack V.6.01. I used all three and somehow my problem is now solved. I hope this helps.

I wish people would start new threads instead of bumping old, dead ones... especially when they ask totally unrelated questions

Original poster is incorrect. The Hauppauge DEC2000 uses MPEG-2, not VP6. If you need an MPEG-2 decoder, you can get a freeware one here

Based on this page the gigapocket supports MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, and possibly WMV and DV AVI. Now I know MPEG-1, WMV, and DV AVI are all supported in Windows by default (DV AVI since DirectX 8 to be exact). The most likely cause of an mpg file not importing in WMM would be it’s MPEG-2 and you don’t have a decoder. See first link above for a freeware one.

Everybody else:
Don’t just randomly download codec packs without even knowing what format your file is in!
Get either gspot or avicodec to find out what codec your file uses, then search it, download it, and install it.
Sometimes you’ll find out you have the correct codec, but your file is truncated (of incorrect length) - gspot will say something like 'corrupt AVI header'. Windows Movie Maker can’t handle those. The simple way to fix this is to get NanDub, open your file with it, click video, direct stream copy (very important!!! if you don’t select direct stream copy it will resave the file as uncompressed, which is humongous), then file, save as avi, and give it another name. That will copy the file exactly as is, but with correct size information, and it will be readable by movie maker.
