My computer wont registar this game

hi. i donwloaded AOE, the conquerours expansion, it game in a file, and all i had to do was put the file in my rogram directory and i could play, i did that and it all works, but because i didnt actually install it, my computer donst know its there, so when i go to install patchs and such, or play online it says, “cannot find AOE on your computer, check that you have it installed and try again” or somthing similer, is there anyway i can get my computer to registar that the game is there?
