DVD size help!

i use nerovision to burn my avi/mpeg/wma files, and it automatically convert it to dvd supported files like vob, but why is one file taking so much space, like when i upload a 200mb avi file it says on the indicator that its taking up over 2GB! is it suppose to be like that? can i reduce the size so i can put more files on one dvd?
