Using nero6 to burn a video file to svcd

Hi,
I have downloaded a movie in avi and it plays fine on WMP and RP. I want to make an svcd and am using nero 6. At first it said unsupported file so I asked around and was told to use TMP_Genc to onvert from avi to mpeg2. I did this then nero6 told me I needed a plug in when I tried to burn to svcd using nero express. I downloaded the plug in (mpeg2 to svcd) then tried again. This time it tried to start then said file formay unsupported. Have I done something wrong here? Any help appreciated.
