You must have heard this one before, but I’m having a real problem playing some MPEG movies on my system. I keep getting a 'Class not Registered' error. After a little research I believe I’m missing one or more codecs, but am prepared to entertain the notion that my system needs upgrading. I have several players, including WMP9 and RP10, but the processor is a creaky old 433MHz Celeron, and OS is Win98SE. I’m pretty sure it’s not the movies themselves, which are either good copies or else have been run through a suitable repair utility.

Help and T.I.A.

What kind of vid card are you running? 433MHz should be enough processor, although I’d consider upgrading pretty soon wink. I’d recommend at least 16Megs of GPU RAM. I kinda doubt it is a codec problem, but you could try out something such as Nimo’s codec pack, which covers almost all MPEG codecs...

433MHz celeron is baaad. It should be able to playback many video clips but will run into huge probloms with mpeg4 (requires a substantial amount of cpu processing) compressed video (divx and all the clones). A p3 at 433mhz might do it, but a celeron bah. 'Class not Registered' is, I believe, most likely a codec problem - if not it could be a program problem- reinstall wmp9 — alternatively if you can, try using an earlier version of media player ie version 6.4. Maybe wmp9 is not very good on low end pcs (all it’s visualization, flashy windows, round curves etc. take up memory and cpu resources — personally on a p4 1.8@2.0 I use mp 6.4 to play back whatever I need). Reinstall of windows might help also (i doubt you can truly downgrade wmp).
