mkv x264 convert. please help

hi to all!
i have this video, downloaded from the net, in .mkv format. it says it’s been encoded using x264. i’m not an expert, but i need the file in .avi format for studying purposes.

i’ve tried a lot of programs in ordert to convert it, but the file seems to be corrupted. on the other hand, videolan (vlc media player) seems to be the only one the read it perfectly.. any suggestion?
