Please HELP. Problem playing .MKV file.

Hi,

Recently I downloaded this file :

The Lord of the Rings ROTK (7.93GB when uncompressed).

This file has the .mkv extension. I have gone to the Matroska website and downloaded VLC player and tried to play this file with it. The movies plays for around 40-45 seconds and then an error comes up (VLC player needs to shutdown/or VLC freezes). What is the problem and what can i do to rectify it?
