Just about every DVD player on the market today (with the exception of the Playstation 2, which is a piece of shit) can play VCD’s.

As far as playing movie files just burned to CD, that all depends. Different DVD players have varying degrees of MPEG support, and the Kiss brand of DVD players can play DivX.

If I were you I’d just go out and buy something dirt cheap that can play VCD’s, and figure out a way to convert your other movies to VCD’s.

Enter the model of some of the DVD players you are looking at, and it will tell you what formats it will play and what type of discs it can read (several DVD players will play CD-RW but not CD-R, for example...). Believe it or not, one of the best brands for multi-format is those cheap-azz APEX players, but they are usually lacking some in quality when it comes to legit DVD’s. I use a Sony for regular DVD’s and an APEX for all the 'dark' stuff...
