whiteboy Guest | look you have to find the right codec in the first place to play it but if you have windows media player 9.0 then it has the codec in it to open it and if it says error its a bad file look for mpeg codec to download mpeg2 and mpeg4

Nang-a-nator Guest | I think it’s time we all agreed that windows media player is basically useless for playing almost any type of media file. Also, the chances of anyone being able to ever get the correct codec from the windows media player auto codec download server is minimal (Especially for those of you with illegal copies of windows). I have found a pack of codecs called ffdshow. It contains codecs for the most common and some not to common video formats. So far it has worked wonders for me. I havent come across a video file that it cant play. Unfortunately due to windows media players uselessness you will have to use a seperate program which will actually use the good codecs. Something like winamp would do the job. If you get no sound when playing an avi or a divx or any thing like that it is because you either dont have a good splitter or a good audio codec (or whoever encoded it screwed up). This is personal opinion, it may not be factual, but the divx format and the divx player are both very crappy items, but owing to their easy of use and large availability many people still seem inclined to use them to encode their movies. It will sometimes pay to have the most updated divx codec on your computer, but i would strongly suggest just forgeting that the divx player even exists.

Regular Rep: 0Joined: 14 Nov 2003 Posts: 615 OFFLINE | Nang-a-nator - FFDShow is a DirectShow Decoding Filter, not a codec (ie - you cannot encode using FFDShow itself). Also, FFDShow-Alpha is the actual full name of the one that is good.
While I agree that most Windows Media Player versions are below standard, there is one that’s ok. This is WMP 6.4. Go to Run and type in - mplayer2 and press Enter.
