Convert codecs/programs?

Hi
I download series like Prison Break, The OC, Lost and so on. And all these has been coded in a great quality. The only thing i know is that it ends with .avi and is divx. Does someone know where i can find this program/codec/whatever to convert my own movies to this fantastic movie code?
