Dr. Piranha Guest | Hey I just got a JVC-GZ MG20U HDD Everio camcorder and I also bought a copy of Sony Vegas 6.0 and I can’t seem to get it to read the files. The Power Director Express NE that came with the camcorder opens the files fine, but lacks quite a lot in the way of editing and quite a few more features. Is there any codec I can install within Sony Vegas 6.0 that will read the files?
Thanks For The Help!

ckflip Guest | I cant believe it after 2 years of using converting programs just to preview the clips it is as simple as just changing the .MOD to .mpg Great tip so simple, so effective it just should’nt work but it does. Thanks

Matthew B. Guest | I have the same camcorder, a Mac, and the same problem. Here’s what I’ve learned (I’m not going to re-research, so take my memory with a grain of salt).
There are a couple types of .MOD files. Or actually, there are a couple of MPEG-2 files, which are what the camera’s .MOD files actually are. Regular MPEG-2 files should work fine on a Mac if you buy the codec from Apple. However, the MPEG-2 files that the JVC GZ-MG20U camera uses is a variant that interlaces in some way the video and audio. The camera uses this type of format to make burning DVD’s simple for the consumer, provided that you use their software.
However, if you want to use them with anything else on a Mac, the particular MPEG-2 format the camera uses isn’t compatible, even if you buy the codec. I’m told Windows can handle it, but Macs can’t. That’s why simply renaming the files doesn’t fix the problem. You have to convert them.
To convert the files, I’ve found it’s easiest to use the software that comes with the camera. You have to upload your .MOD files into the program, then compile them, as if you’re saving them as a movie, in whatever format you want. The problem is it take foreeever. It’s really annoying actually, and for myself, makes the camera too burdensome to use regularly. However, once it’s converted, you’re good to go.
My response to all this, if you’re a Mac user, give the camera the boot. I know I am. I’m switching to Mini DV, which means you have to convert video in real time - but that’s still better than the alternative.
That was my experience - granted, I went through this about six months ago, so the story might have changed since then. I’m also using a Powerbook G4 and Mac OS X, Tyger. I don’t know if the story changes on a MacBook and with the new Leopard system.
Good luck.

RobbieL Guest | Does anyone happen to know where I can download the software that came with this cam? I bought a refurb one and it doesn’t have the software included.

earljh Guest | To solve the problem with Windows, I found that Adobe Premiere Elements could handle the MOD without any problem. I understand Pinnacle (at least some of them) can too. I never had a problem after that.
