Not necessarily true. The file may be corrupt, don’t count on it.
2 steps to try before you try anything else:
1. Download VideoLan player from the VLC website and try opening the file with that. It opens almost anything - music and video.
2. Download the GSpot Codec Information Application and use that to see what codec you need and whether or not you have it installed. If you don’t have the relevant codec, go to http://www.free-codecs.com/ and search for it. Download, install. Then try playing the file again! Easy mistake to forget the last step!
If none of that works, post with full details of the file, and preferably a URL where we can find a screenshot of GSpot’s information on the file, and any other relevant information.

enter.oblivion Guest | I’ve been trying to play a few MP3s files on media player which didn’t seem to work.
I tried renaming to extensions to various other media formats such as .wma, .ogg, .wav etc. Even renaming it as a zip file and unzipping it and then renaming it to a supported format.
My last attempt was to try importing the MP3 file into Audacity and then exporting it back into the MP3 format. Success! It actually worked. I suspect that the file was compressed using an unsupported codec. If anyone has had trouble like this, then I certainly recomment using a freeware tool such as Audacity.

Not bad advice, though renaming the files with different extensions WILL NOT fix any problems. Even if the file was renamed to a different format, renaming back is often not the way to fix it.

I could do with some more information about the problem you’re having; that is to say, what kind of media file, what exactly happens when you try to play it etc.

Well chances are you’re missing a codec or two. To find out what you need, use the GSpot Codec Information Appliance to find out what you need. Then, search for it and download it from http://www.free-codecs.com/. Once you’ve done that, reuse GSpot and double check that you no longer have codec shortfalls. That should do it - let me know.

Chazbagz Guest | Hi,
I had exactly the same problem when I tried to watch video files on Windows Media player. I went to www.free-codecs.com and downloaded the XP codec pack and can now watch my files. Don’t know if this will work for any of you but it is worth a shot.

TropicDude Guest | There are certain websites I will go to that have streaming audio, or sometimes AOL will have some intresting streaming video that i just can not play with Media player. Both of which are designed with MP in mind and another player can not be used. About 2 months ago I was able to do all of this fine, but now I find I can not - everytime I try to play the Video, the player just sits there blankly. When I run the streaming audio is when i get the error ID. I followed a ton of suggestions including: check defaults, roll back, install the XP Pack from free codecs, and reinstall MP. None of this has worked. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I wipe my system?
OS - XP SP2, Browser of choice Latest Version of Netscape. All updates that can be run on this system have been run. Running Nortons Internet Security - have tested with it enabled and disabled, with the same error message.
Thanks for any help!!

TropicDude Guest | Just as an addendum - I created a new user acct in XP - and in that user acct, i Am able to do the streaming without any problems. Still testing.......

TropicDude Guest | I fixed the problem - heres something to try for everyone else. First create another user acct and see if the streaming works on that account. If it works on the new account you just created, then go to Windows Explorer, C Drive, Documents and settings, the new acct name, Application Data, Local Settings, Application Data, Microsoft and make sure Windows Media is there. Then copy Windows Media folder to the same location in your user acct. IE C Drive, Documents and settings, your acct name, Application Data, Local Settings, Application Data, Microsoft.
That fixed the problem for me.

grv Guest | archivo MP3?

Check your browser settings, you might have changed something inadvertently. In IE, go Tools, Internet Options, then go to the Advanced tab, and then hit Restore Defaults at the bottom.
Don’t wipe your system! If that doesn’t work, post again and I’ll see what else I can think of.
