MOVs & DVDs Skipping

I CAN get these video formats work:
.rm
.wmv
.asf
.avi
BUT NOT THESE:
.mov (even iTunes won’t play them right)
.vob [DVD]

The MOVs and DVDs skip horribly! It’s hard to explain, but the MOVs skip faster than the DVDs. They skip at least a couple times a second, though the video is affected much less. The DVD audio skips maybe once every second or two, but the video pauses much worse with them then with the MOVs.

They used to run on my machine, but I’ve not been able to track down exactly what is causing this problem now. I’m not sure what I installed/did before this started happening. But I was thinking that there may be some ideas out there?...

I use Media Player Classic usually, but I’ve pretty much ruled out the possibility that this is a player problem.
I’m running a Compaq Presario Widescreen laptop with an AMD Sempron 1.8ghz and 512 RAM.
