XP explorer xvid video codec error when viewing some video folders

With one or two folders in XP which contain my videos, if preview is switched on (from the 'View' pull down menu in any window containing media), explorer tells me it has encountered an error, and needs to close... the details are always similar to this...

“error signature:
appname: explorer.exe
appver 6.02900.2180
Modname:xvid.ax ModverL 0.0.0.0 Offser: 0003dd11”

I’m not 100% sure if this is related entirely to just xvid codec videos (I was certain it happened with mp3s at one point, not 100% on that now though). I am wondering if there is an easy fix? Could I have a corrupted xvid video codec or xp media preview driver? I am unsure how to uininstall/reinstall xvid codecs... I know that if I switch media preview off, the problem is gone, but it is very awkward not being able to use it for info on my mp3s and vids etc.

Incase anyone would like to know how to switch image and/or media preview
on or off, I used this method:

1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

I really dont want to install xp from scratch again, and am certain that it is not a virus as I have scanned my entire system. XP’s Dr watson has the original errors still saved... checked the content and its exactly the same 'wrong frames' message, so maybe its a codec conflict? Just used G-Spot codec checker, checked those vids... they say 'xvid codec installed'+ 'file length correct', and strangely enough, when using file>open in this program and viewing these videos in thumbnail mode to preview, I dont get any error messages. I go back and open the video folder normally... and I do.

In Gspot my xvid codec(s?) is listed as

REG Driver File C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvidvfw.dll
DSH Friendly Name XviD MPEG-4 Codec
- - Type VFW

and

DSH DirectShow CLSID 4cc: xvid
REG Driver File C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvid.ax
DSH Friendly Name XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder
- - Function Decoder
- - Type DSH

In Dr Watson (start>run>drwtsn32) I get
“WARNING: Stack unwind information not available. Following frames may be wrong."

I could always delete the xvid.ax' that seems to be causing the problems and try reinstalling just an xvid codec but I dont think that would do anything. Ive also used StormCodec5.12RC3 from www.9down.com to update my codecs but no difference!

Cheers and merry xmas if anyone can help! hehe grin

go start > run , and enter this command:
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

then video prewiew is turned off so it dosn’t crash anymore. for me this problem showed up when I updated my ATI drivers...

Ihad this problem for sometime. if you go into system32 and delete xvid.ax file from the folder. it workes fine and does not crash explorer anymore, video priview comes back without having to change regsvr32 it works for me and all is normal again.
